About Us
Artbox London is a registered charity and social enterprise collaborating with learning disabled and autistic artists through a programme of art workshops, cultural trips, exhibitions, and opportunities to sell and license their work.
Our workshops take place in our friendly and accessible studio in Islington, where artists explore their creative interests and develop their artistic skills using a wide range of materials and techniques. Whether painting, drawing, printing, or sculpting, each session is filled with creativity, conversation, and connection. Artists work individually or alongside peers, supported by our dedicated Art Facilitators and volunteers, to produce bold, original pieces that express their individuality and unique personalities.
Beyond the studio, we offer regular cultural outings to London’s galleries and museums, helping artists develop ideas, build confidence, and feel at home in the city’s cultural spaces. We also take artists on nature-based trips to parks and gardens, as well as outdoor drawing sessions around the city—sketching buildings, landscapes, and public spaces. These experiences spark inspiration, deepen artistic practice, and encourage a stronger connection to the world around them. They also foster independence, wellbeing, and greater visibility in the wider community.Regular visits to galleries and museums inspire the artists and help them develop new ideas. Trips also help our artists become familiar with cultural venues, increase their confidence and independence, while simultaneously their visibility is increased within London’s cultural centres.
Through public exhibitions, commissions, and our online shop, we showcase the talent of our artists and shift perceptions about what learning disabled and neurodivergent people can achieve. Every artwork tells a story—and every story challenges expectations and celebrates creativity.
Who are our artists?
Our community includes around 80 learning disabled and autistic artists who come together weekly at the Artbox London studio to develop their creative practice. They travel from across London and represent a wide range of ages, backgrounds, and cultures, reflecting both our local community and the wider world.
Many of our artists have additional support needs and face significant barriers to full participation in society. Focusing on those who are often underrepresented in the arts, we’ve learned since 2011 that true inclusion begins with listening—taking a personalised, artist-led approach and working closely with those who know each individual best. This approach helps remove obstacles and ensures creativity is both accessible and joyful.
Together, we’ve built a space where artists can express themselves freely, develop skills at their own pace, and feel a deep sense of belonging in a welcoming and supportive community.
